1.  FOREIGN DRIVING LICENSE ARE RECOGNISED IN SWITZERLAND.

They can only be used in private and for a maximum of one year. To continue driving after one year or to drive professionally, you must change your driving license to a Swiss license.

Depending on your country of issue, you can exchange your foreign license directly for a Swiss license or you have to take a practical test (test run).

2.  EXCHANGE WITHOUT A PRACTICAL TEST

If your driving license was issued in one of the following countries, it will be exchanged without any test:

Andorra / Australia / Austria / Belgium / Bulgaria / Canada / Cyprus / Croatia / Czech Republic / Denmark / Estonia / Finland / France / Germany / Great Britain / Greece / Hungary / Iceland / Ireland / Israel / Italy / Japan / South Korea / Latvia / Liechtenstein / Lithuania / Luxembourg / Malta / Monaco / Morocco / Netherlands / New Zealand / Norway / Poland / Portugal / Romania / San Marino / Singapore / Slovakia / Slovenia / Spain / Sweden / Tunisia / USA

3.  EXCHANGE WITH A PRACTICAL TEST

If your driving license was issued in another country, you must take a practical driving test to obtain a Swiss license.

Please note: You only get one chance! If you fail the practical driving test you will have to follow the normal process of obtaining a Swiss driving license.

Therefore, we advise you to prepare yourself well for this test. 

No vehicle registered abroad admitted to the exam!

4.  TO MAKE THE CHANGE

You must fill in the official form for the exchange of permits of the Canton of Vaud. You must also go to the counter in person with the following documents:

• Form for the exchange of a foreign driving license. Download the document here.
• Original of the foreign driving license to be exchanged
• Certificate from an approved optician (not older than 24 months)
• 1 passport-size color photo, head-on
• Identity card, passport or permis de séjour
